The tetrameter is a verse of four feet.
Using Tetrameter Verses
The tetrameter verse was common all over Europe between the sixth and fourteenth centuries1, and is still widely today. For example, William Wordsworth’s poem The Reaper opens with the verses:
“Behold her, single in the field,
Yon solitary Highland Lass!”
Highlighting the accents and the feet,
“Behold | her, sin | gle in | the field,
Yon so | lita | ry High | land Lass!”
In this example, the meter used is the iambic tetrameter, which was apparently a favourite meter during the Middle Ages1.
